Using Math Moments to Multiply Math Skills
When you ask adults how they feel about mathematics, the response is often negative. Ask this same question to many educators and the response is often very similar. Given that mathematics has often been taught with an overemphasis on the memorization of steps and procedures compounded with praise for those who can recall quickly, it is no wonder that we find ourselves in this unfortunate reality.
Can you imagine a society where the majority of children and adults had a positive disposition towards mathematics much like we have for reading and writing?
It is possible, but not if we continue to teach using a “procedures first” approach to mathematics.
Let’s work to repair the many broken relationships with mathematics that exist around us by crafting Math Moments that construct conceptual understanding first and lead to both our students and us being better positioned to generate algorithms to build procedural fluency.
If you have a broken relationship with mathematics or if you simply want to be able to reach more students by leading problem-based lessons that build conceptual understanding and procedural fluency, this webinar series is for you.
This is a 10-part series focusing on shifting your mindset, number sense (two webinars), relationships and proportional reasoning (five webinars) and measurement (two webinars).
