Many FSL teachers have questions about how to address the Intercultural Awareness expectations in the revised curriculum. In addition, we often struggle with how to enrich our students’ experiences with reading and go beyond simple comprehension to meet curriculum expectations.
In this workshop, participants will discuss ways to deepen their students’ understandings of texts, and how to use our reading programs as an opportunity to introduce authentic language models and to foster intercultural awareness. Topics will include teaching reading strategies, activities to take reading comprehension further, using texts as models, and building text-to-self and text-to-world connections. We will examine concrete ways teachers can facilitate students ability to “using information from a variety of French texts, identify French speaking communities worldwide, find out about aspects of their cultures, and make connections to personal experiences and their own and other communities” (taken from 2013 secondary FSL curriculum).
