This course will be of particular interest to teachers who wish to teach General Science at the grade 11 and 12 level. This course consists of a series of online discussions, laboratory activities, computer technology, emphasizing the expectations, teaching strategies, evaluation strategies, and content of grade 11 and 12 Science courses as described in the Ontario curriculum. Emphasis will be placed on creative lesson and unit planning, making connections, the Achievement Chart, assessment and evaluation.
NOTE: Candidates may wish to check with their local school boards to confirm eligibility to teach subject specific science courses with this qualification. Some school boards will require subject specific Senior Science qualifications ie: Senior Science Chemistry, for example.
Topics include:
- understanding the role of Science – General in cross-curricular planning
- understanding scientific literacy, technological capabilities and learning theory specific to Science – General in the senior division
- knowing how to modify and accommodate the needs of students with exceptionalities
- understanding and employing a variety of assessment and evaluation instruments
- understanding curricular implications of educational destinations – work, college and university
- connecting Science – General to students’ everyday experiences
- planning and organizing an effective and safe program in Science – General
- identifying factors in a diverse and changing society that impact on the adolescent learner in Science – General (for example, , family patterns, language, culture, gender)
- understanding the skills, strategies and habits of mind required for scientific inquiry and technological design as they apply to the adolescent learner
- understanding how to help the adolescent learner to relate scientific and technological knowledge to each other and to the world outside the school.
