The Additional Qualification course: International Language (Italian), Part I is an introductory course that focuses on the theory and practice underpinning international languages education. This course will be of interest to teachers who wish to prepare themselves to teach Italian courses at all grade levels or others who wish to acquire fundamental knowledge and skills in Italian as a second language education. Candidates will have opportunities to reflect, communicate and apply their learning through practical learning experiences.

Topics include:

• Benefits of teaching  and learning Italian
• Transferable skills and meeting the curriculum expectations
• Understanding human growth and development and language learning
• Theories of second language acquisition
• Communicative language teaching
• New approaches to teaching Italian
• Engaging students and the role of the Italian teacher
• Teaching in a multilevel class
• Teaching and integrating the four skills in Italian
• Italian Culture and connections to the community

Requirements:

Hold a “Certificate of Qualification” or “Interim Certificate of Qualification” showing basic qualifications in two divisions, i.e. Primary, Junior, Intermediate, or Senior. Candidates who hold an Interim COQ may have different/additional criteria for registration as required by the Ontario College of Teachers, and as specified on their Interim COQ.

Pass the Italian proficiency test with at least an overall B.
