This program provides you with both a theoretical and practical introduction to the teaching of visual arts at the elementary and secondary levels. Hands-on workshops will expand your understanding, appreciation, and skill with various visual arts experiences. You will develop confidence in your ability to deliver appropriate and challenging studio activities to meet Ministry of Education policies and standards. Issues of safety and liability at a classroom level will be discussed. The program focuses on the exploration of 16 design elements using a variety of media and you will have an opportunity to demonstrate an understanding of the philosophy of visual arts education grounded in the developmental stages of child art. You will also learn to use a variety of authentic assessment strategies and practical evaluation instruments. Art appreciation, history, aesthetics, and criticism will also be explored, and there will be an introduction to curriculum and sequential lesson development.
