Teaching Students with Mild Intellectual Disabilities AQ (Queen’s, Fall 2019, Online)

The additional qualification course, Teaching Students with Intellectual Needs Mild Intellectual Delay (MID), focuses on theory and practice to support students with MID. Through discussion and collaboration, candidates will explore programming, development, and implementation of instructional practices, along with assessment and evaluation for students with mild intellectual needs. The course will investigate the distinct cognitive and social-emotional connotations of students with MID and generate ways to develop a safe, caring, and inclusive classroom within a positive learning environment. Exploring research-based approaches and using differentiated instruction and inquiry, candidates will be provided with the opportunity to apply learning to developing student profiles, transition plans, and acquire key strategies to be used in ethical considerations for teaching practice. This course also analyses the enrichment of professional knowledge, ethical practice, and leadership in working with school-based teams and community personnel, in connection with Ontario curriculum, government policies and legislation, frameworks, strategies, and resources that reflect care, diversity, and equity for all students.
