AQ Teaching English Language Learners, Part 2
Course Description:
The focus of this course is for a further in-depth look at the theories and foundation covered in Part 1 and link theory to practice. The aim is to develop a more comprehensive understanding of ESL necessary for an engaging design and delivery process. The course will expand the use of assessment strategies to reflect the role of a teacher as a controller, participant and resource for ESL and provide advanced attention for curriculum development.
Topics include:
• Applying the theories of learning styles in the development of ESL and ELD programs
• Analyzing research related to immigration, resettlement and anti-racist education
• Identifying strategies to develop programs for supporting ELLs in the mainstream
• Expanding use of information technology as a teaching and learning tool
• Reviewing Canadian Language Benchmarks and Methods of teaching
• Reviewing the importance of first language use in the classroom
• Understanding types of errors made by ELLs and L1 interference
• Understanding inductive teaching, intensive vs. extensive listening and reading
• Understanding different strategies of assessment at different stages of English proficiency
Requirements:
- Completion of English as a Second Language, Part 1
- Hold a “Certificate of Qualification” in good standing.
- one year teaching experience as verified on the Confirmation of Teaching Experience form, signed by a supervisory officer, confirming one year of teaching experience completed after teacher’s certification.
***For teachers employed by an Independent or Private school, the Supervisory Officer is the MInistry of Education official (e.g. Education Officer) appointed to provide supervisory services to the school.
