The focus in Librarianship Part 2 is on the teacher librarian (TL) as a teacher and on the school library as a critical component of every student’s education. Recent, groundbreaking research provides strong evidence that school libraries and teacher librarians have a positive impact on student learning. In this course you will have the opportunity to consider how to use this new data, in combination with creative advocacy skills, to draw the attention of administrators, parents and colleagues to the difference a school library may make in a child’s education.
Teacher librarians are leading promoters of reading and literacy in schools, so we will pursue this challenging TL role within the context of a focus on Canadian literature and an investigation of techniques for promoting independent reading at all grade levels.
Topics in this course include:
– The role of role of the teacher librarian as a teacher of research skills for students, as a designer of professional development for teachers and as a coordinator of information services
– A review of the research process model advocated by the Ontario School Library Association
– An examination of critical issues that connect to student research, including copyright, plagiarism and methods for bibliographic citations
– The consideration of best practices in collaboration for teacher librarians as working with teachers to provide information literacy instruction for the students
– Ways to keep upto-date with notable childrens and young adult literature
– Methods to promote reading at all grade levels
– Ways to teach and promote the critical evaluation of information by students
