Where are the school libraries? And where are our teacher librarians?
Research and experience consistently demonstrate that quality resources and professionally staffed school libraries are strongly linked to information literacy skills, student achievement, aptitude and interest in reading, success at the post-secondary level and Canadian cultural identity. ( Literacy and school libraries — the big disconnect. OSLA 2004)
While some boards are “de-emphasizing” teacher librarians, others do recognize the value of this critical position.
This course presents to potential teacher librarians the essential tasks of librarianship:
– Selection and acquisition of library resources
– Organization of resources
– Basic service to school library patrons, both students and teachers
– Role of the teacher librarian: how we, teacher librarians, fit so beautifully into the new curriculum
– Added benefits we can offer to a school, its students and to its administration and ability to partner with the classroom teacher
By the time you complete Librarianship Part 1, you’ll know about:
– Key Ministry of Education and other documents relating to school librarianship
– Core tasks of school librarianship: the selection, acquisition, and organization of resources and providing service to students and teachers
– Basic tools and procedures for the selection, acquisition and organization of resources
– Issues associated with the selection of resources, particularly censorship
– The service role of the teacher librarian in teaching and learning in the school.
