Course Description

This course will explore key concepts such as fostering reading and literacy skills, promoting independent research and information literacy, curating resources and technologies, and developing digital literacy and multimedia skills to support lifelong learning in today’s information- and knowledge-based society. By examining the Ontario curriculum considerations for program planning and cross-curricular and integrated learning, Culturally Responsive and Relevant Pedagogy (CRRP) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), participants develop an understanding of how the school library and the teacher-librarian support student success across all curriculum areas.

Learner Outcomes

Develop proficiency in recognizing and addressing various forms of oppression within the school library, addressing systemic biases and understanding the dynamics of power and privilege in library practice. *Embrace the Ethical Standards and Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession, understanding their implications in a School Library Learning Commons context and embracing a vision of collaborative inquiry with learners. *Effectively integrate First Nations, Métis, and Inuit histories, perspectives, and knowledge systems in teaching, incorporating knowledge from TRC and UNDRIP into library practices. *Ensure that library practices, assessment, and program implementations are aligned with the Ontario curriculum, relevant Ministry of Education policies, frameworks, and guidelines. *Recognize and fulfill legal obligations as per Ontario legislation concerning human rights, accessibility, privacy, intellectual property, and other relevant domains. Embrace ethical responsibilities to enhance accessibility and inclusion for all learners. *Utilize diverse strategies such as universal design for learning, experiential learning, and differentiated instruction to cater to each learner’s needs, and ensure the effective development of Individual Education Plans. *Engage with current educational research and theories of learning and teaching to inform library practices, utilizing knowledge to create a learner-centered environment within the School Library Learning Commons. *Implement strategies that prioritize learners’ curiosities, experiences, and well-being, fostering an empowered learning community rooted in respect, inclusivity, and cultural relevance. *Develop and implement programs in alignment with Ontario’s curriculum, incorporating diverse teaching strategies, information literacy skills, and a commitment to building a resource-rich School Library Learning Commons that supports informed decision-making and learner development. *Engage in and promote professional learning communities that advance critical pedagogy, foster collaboration with various stakeholders, and ensure shared responsibility for learning, emphasizing sustainability, social justice, cultural responsiveness, and digital literacy.

Prerequisites

OCT MEMBERSHIP with qualifications in Primary, Junior, Intermediate or Senior./ *Tech Certified Teachers who do not hold an undergraduate degree are not eligible to take this course.
