The ability to read is probably one of the most important indicators of future success for students in our schools. As teachers we are striving to create classrooms where all children read and write; that goal is probably the motivation that brings you to this course.
Reading Part II will provide practical opportunities for the experienced teacher to extend and reinforce learning from Reading Part One. Guidelines, policies and procedures will be analyzed to promote a comprehensive understanding of expectations for the teaching of reading. Self-assessments of the learning environment and guided reading instruction will provide the impetus for examination of effective implementation of a balanced literacy program. A study of children’s literature will lead to the development of reading lesson plans that connect the Reading program to Science and Technology and Social Studies. An examination of the characteristics of struggling readers will focus attention on how to effectively support these students, and their parents, in the regular classroom program. And finally, good strategies for assessment in the classroom will be explored and discussed. In the culminating activity, analysis of actual teaching activity will be used to further develop effective teaching strategies that support the expectations of the Ontario curriculum.
