Reading, Part 2 AQ (York) (blended)

July 4, 2016 to July 19, 2016

  • Category: AQ
  • Region: GTA
  • Topic: Language Arts, Literacy
  • Grades: Intermediate (grades 7-10), JK-SK, Junior (grades 4-6), Primary (grades 1-3), Senior (grades 11-12)

In this program, you will examine the work of the literacy teacher in terms of both program and instructional practices and the opportunities and challenges faced by teachers in improving literacy. Building upon the foundations you established in Part 1, you will examine the research, enhance your capacity to build a balanced literacy program; receive advanced instruction in the practices of teaching reading, develop strategies to construct meaning and encourage critical thinking. The evaluation and use of children’s/adolescent literature, as well as the effective assessment practices for checking progress, evaluation issues and individualized programming, will provide a particular focus. Issues of literacy faced by the classroom teacher, such as the place of phonemic awareness and alphabet knowledge in the program, establishing literacy standards, and the role of technology, will be discussed. The focus moves from the classroom to school-wide approaches to literacy.  See website for additional information.
