The Additional Qualification course Reading, Part 1 focuses on the relevant research evidence underpinning effective reading instruction including: theoretical foundations, current approaches to literacy instruction, the relationship of reading to other aspects of language development, the learning environment, assessment and evaluation, and ethical considerations related to the teaching of reading. The process of learning to read and the teaching of reading will be investigated through The Ontario Curriculum and related Ministry of Education documents. The course is designed to enhance professional practice and extend knowledge and skills. Candidates will engage in professional reading, inquiry, dialogue and reflection with a special focus on early years.
The course requires a minimum of 125 hours of work by the candidate. Successful candidates will be recommended for the Ontario College of Teachers Additional Qualification Reading, Part 1.
The course will appear as Reading Part 1 on a candidates Certificate of Qualification and Registration with OCT; however a document will be shared with successful candidates to demonstrate that they have taken Reading Part 1 with a Early Years Focus.
