Welcome to the unique world of the occasional teacher. One day you are teaching literacy to students in a suburban classroom and the next you are teaching physical education in an inner-city school. This course will prepare you for working in a variety of teaching contexts by equipping you with ideas, strategies, and practical activities designed to meet the needs of occasional teachers. Course assignments allow you to tailor your work to reflect your grades of interest.
One of the greatest benefits of this course is that you have the opportunity to share your experiences and expectations around occasional teaching with colleagues and, in so doing, learn from one another. You will explore topics related to Ontario curriculum documents and policies, effective practices for planning and implementing lessons, selecting appropriate resources, and supporting all learners. You will investigate ways to work collaboratively with members of school communities, including educational assistants, administrators and parents/guardians. You will also develop valuable practices around safety and preparedness for diverse classroom settings.
In this course, you will:
- Engage in meaningful dialogue about the professional role of the occasional teacher
- Learn management strategies for creating an effective learning environment
- Develop ways to effectively communicate with principals, staff, and parents/guardians
- Learn how to integrate differentiated instruction and universal design for learning into your practice
- Develop helpful practices around safety and preparedness for diverse classroom settings.
