Course Description

In the Intermediate Instrumental Music ABQ the teacher explores beginning woodwind, brass, percussion, string and guitar techniques and pedagogy as well as effective teaching and learning strategies suitable to the intermediate division. Teachers will gain a deeper working knowledge of the music curricula and ministry initiatives while exploring various learning theories and differentiated instruction in music. Activities will include: performance, conducting, listening, transposition/arranging, creativity in the music classroom, music of other cultures, music technology and exploring quality instrumental repertoire and resources as well as the opportunity to attend numerous workshops.

Prerequisites

    1. Certificate of Qualification:
      Must be registered with the Ontario College of Teachers or hold an interim Certificate of Qualification. Must hold an acceptable university degree or equivalent. It is no longer necessary to send in a copy of your Certificate of Qualification. We have access to this information via the OCT Public Registry.
    2. Must be able to “sight read” music notation and play an instrument at an intermediate standard (ex. RCM Level 6) or better.
    3. 2 Full University Degree Credits in the Subject:
      Official transcript(s) showing proof of successful completion of a minimum of 2.0 university degree credits or the equivalent in the teaching subject. 1.0 credit must be in music performance.

      OR

      1 Full University Degree Credit in the Subject AND Royal Conservatory of Music Grade 8 or Grade 9 Certificate*:
      Official transcript(s) showing proof of successful completion of a minimum of 1.0 university degree credits or the equivalent in the teaching subject.

      OR

      Royal Conservatory of Music Grade 10 Certificate OR ARCT

PLEASE NOTE:

*1.0 university degree credits is the equivalent to 1 full year course, or, 2 half-year courses.

**International equivalent(s) to Orff will be considered on a case to case basis.
