It is no secret that teachers tend to teach the way they were taught. If this way was the lecture-drill method then they will think of teaching as a way of giving information to students and marking worksheets. Does this sound familiar? As a student yourself, did you find mathematics interesting, challenging and meaningful – something you wanted to do or something you had to do?

The National Council of Teachers of mathematics Curriculum and Evaluation Standard for School Mathematics presents a vision of the mathematics that all students need to know and be able to do in our complex and rapidly changing society.
This Mathematics Education (Primary/Junior) Part 2 course is a journey to empowerment. It will require you to learn more about mathematics yourself, about how children learn mathematics and about how mathematics should be taught for such a changing world.

Topics in this course include:

– Learning theories and how they impact the teaching and learning of mathematics
– Problem solving and how it is more than just the correct answer
– Communication to foster the development of students’ potential in mathematics
– Gender, ethnicity and culture as they relate to the teaching of elementary mathematics

– Cooperative learning in mathematics
– Connections in mathematics
