Welcome to the Manufacturing Technology course offered by the Office of Continuing Teacher Education at the Faculty of Education, Queen’s University. The course is a blend of manufacturing theory and practical experience. It includes online learning as well as hands-on workshops and projects in the manufacturing shop.

There will be a materials fee of $125.00 per student, payable to the instructor on the first day of the course.

What You’ll Learn

The objective of this course is to increase your technical skills in Manufacturing Technology to a level where you will feel confident teaching Grade 9 or 10. By the end of the course, you will be able to safely use the tools and equipment found in the manufacturing shop.

Before beginning, review all modules and familiarize yourself with the D2L format. You’ll also find helpful resources in the Course Toolkit.

In this course you will:

– apply a design process and its elements
– use layout methodology and the associated tools
– select appropriate materials for a manufacturing project
– select and use various hand and power tools appropriate to a manufacturing project
– identify and apply proper use of jigs and fixtures using measurement tools including micrometres, vernier calipers, gauges, rules, dial indicators, and vernier height gauge
– select and use basic manufacturing equipment including engine lathes, drill presses, arbor presses, vertical and horizontal bandsaws, and Computer Numerical Control, e.g., CNC mill/lathe
– select and use appropriate welding and cutting equipment including
• oxy-fuel
• plasma cutting
• arc welding
• MIG welding
• soldering equipment
– apply heat treatment process
– select and use appropriate sheet metal equipment including
• shears
• brakes
• rollers
• formers
• benders
– select and use tools that operate using compressed air

The on-site classes will be at LaSalle Secondary School in Kingston, ON. More information regarding this will be provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course.

1) OCT MEMBERSHIP

We will use the OCT number you provide during online registration to confirm you are an OCT member.

2) WORK EXPERIENCE LETTERS (not required if you already have Technological Education qualifications)

If this is your first Technological ABQ you must submit letters of experience on company letterhead confirming at least 5 years* of full-time wage-earning experience, teaching, training or managing experience can be considered as acceptable experience OR at least 2 years* of full-time wage-earning experience AND successful completion of a 3 year post-secondary education program in Manufacturing Technology.

Acceptable Experience:

General machinist
Tool and Die Maker
Welding/fabrication

*One year of work experience can be interpreted as 1,700 hours of work experience.

**If you were self-employed you must submit a sworn affidavit, a business license, proof of income and a letter from a major supplier/customer to confirm your 5 years of work experience.
