The underlying purpose of the Additional Basic Qualification course: Intermediate Division Science -General is to extend skills and knowledge of teachers in the design, delivery and assessment in the teaching of science to students in grades 7-10. The Additional Basic Qualification course: Science – General supports the expectations outlined in the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum policy documents and other Ministry of Education policies. The emphasis in this course is on helping teachers develop effective student-centred teaching strategies. The course is designed to promote strategies that support students’ conceptual development and enduring understandings.
Topics in this course include:
– Beginning approaches such as analysis of teaching styles and understanding the importance of science.
– Learning styles and learning theory, assessment and evaluation, conceptual change, motivation, and equity and exceptionality.
– A variety of teaching and learning strategies for intermediate science are explored, including demonstrations, lab work, cooperative learning, safety, and self-directed learning.
– Explore science in the real world, including the following topics: the role of science, technology, society and the environment, and science in the news media.
– A course culminating activity designed to synthesize their learning from the course so as to enhance their teaching practice.
