Course Description
The Intermediate History additional qualification course will introduce teachers to the major curriculum and instructional issues relevant to the teaching of grades seven, eight and ten history courses in the province of Ontario. The course will emphasize current research and practice in:*the discipline of history*teaching in the province of Ontario*student learning & evaluation in the intermediate history classroom*classroom management*career educationTeachers will actively involve* themselves in the course through readings, research, written assignments, and discussions.
Learner Outcomes
Identify and analyze the characteristics of adolescent learners to tailor instructional approaches effectively in the history classroom.*Explore and apply a range of creative learning strategies suitable for engaging adolescent learners in the study of history. *Evaluate current assessment procedures in history education to inform effective assessment practices that align with curriculum expectations.*Demonstrate an understanding of the structure and implementation procedures of Ministry of Education documents relevant to history education.*Develop the knowledge and skills necessary to become an effective history teacher, encompassing pedagogical approaches, content expertise, and classroom management strategies.*Recognize and articulate the significance of studying history in the 21st century, including its relevance to critical thinking, citizenship, and understanding contemporary societal issues.
Prerequisites
1. OCT MEMBERSHIP confirming you are an OCT member with an undergraduate degree./ 2. UNDERGRADUATE/GRADUATE UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPT(S) / Your transcript(s) must show: The equivalent of 2.0 full undergraduate/graduate credits in history and of those, at least a half credit must be in Canadian History
