Course Description:

Please Note: This is a blended course consisting of 72 hours of face-to-face time and 28 hours online.

LOCATION: Faculty of Education Gym

The purpose of this course is to extend and apply the skills and knowledge in the design, delivery and assessment of Health Education and Physical Education begun in either ABQ Health and Physical Education or in Health and Physical Education, Part I. It focuses on opportunities to explore in-depth information and issues regarding developing programs that model a healthy active living approach and integrating health education topics in a meaningful way.  It further focuses on the adolescent learner from grades 7 to 12.

Topics in this course include:

  • reflecting on the Health and Physical Education curriculum using the Ministry curricula d
  • impact of a comprehensive approach to health education that focuses on living skills
  • learning preferences such as multiple intelligences and learning styles as well as theories of development as they relate to Health and Physical Education
  • modeling personal movement skill development and personal fitness improvement
  • maintaining and developing sport and skill expertise in a variety of activities and making connections between personal learning and teaching strategies for students
  • examining the scope and sequence of the Ontario Curriculum HPE expectations from Grades K-8 and 9-12 and making connections between the divisions
  • demonstrating relationships between program planning, assessment and teaching strategies
  • developing program plans that provide students with opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge required to participate in physical activities throughout their lives
  • modeling a Health and Physical Education program which reflects a balance between fundamental movement skills and principles, sport/game strategies, safe practices, active participation, physical fitness, living skills such as decision-making, conflict resolution, social skills, problem solving, goal setting and healthy living
  • examining and evaluating ways of making modifications and accommodations in activities
  • exploring ways to continue to build on relevant connections to intramural and extracurricular programs
  • sharing knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to HPE local networks
  • applying assessment and evaluation policy and principles

Requirements:

  • Hold a “Certificate of Qualification” showing successful completion of ABQ Health and Physical Education (Intermediate) or Health Education and Physical Education (intermediate/senior), Part 1.
  • “Certificate of Qualification” must be in good standing.
  • One year of teaching experience – equivalent to 194 days of teaching experience
as verified on the Confirmation of Teaching Experience form, signed by a supervisory officer, confirming one year of teaching experience completed after teacher’s certification.
  • Form must be submitted within two weeks of the course start date. ***For teachers employed by a Board of Education the Supervisory Officer is the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board. (A principal or headmaster’s signature will not be accepted).
 For teachers employed by an Independent or Private school, the Supervisory Officer is the Ministry of Education official (e.g. Education Officer) appointed to provide supervisory services to the school
