This course will introduce you to the study of guidance in our schools. It is intended for candidates interested in learning more about guidance programs and related resources, and how the skills of a guidance counsellor can be implemented into the classroom to enhance the learning and understanding of others. In addition it will provide candidates with opportunities to learn basic counselling, interpersonal, and human relations skills necessary for addressing the challenges of teaching in contemporary school settings.

Guidance and Career Education Part 1 provides the principal concepts you will need to obtain your minimum guidance qualifications. These concepts include several practical considerations under the topics of Roles and Responsibilities, Program Planning, Theoretical Foundations such as Career Theories, the OSS, Experiential Learning and Legal and Ethical Issues, Interpersonal Skill Development and Communication and Relationships With Schools, Parents, Guardians, and the Community.

If your intentions are to pursue further studies in the guidance field, this course will provide a foundation for your future learning. The pursuit of specialist qualifications will lead to more in-depth study and specialization. Candidates will explore learning through a variety of methods including independent reading and reflection, working with other candidates in the course on a class discussion board, and participation in projects.

Candidates will participate in a course culminating activity designed to synthesize their learning from the course for application to their teaching practice.
