This course is designed to extend the knowledge and skills from Part I and II, with a focus on leadership skills in FSL education. It further focuses on theories and practices of second language acquisition and assessment and provides additional strategies to teachers who wish to deepen their ability to develop FSL programs: Core, Extended, and Immersion. Course Outline
Topics in this course include:
- Developing leadership skills as a Department Head in the planning of meetings
- Providing an array of strategies to assist other FSL teachers in the department
- Examining different roles in leadership in FSL (contacts, department heads, consultants….)
- Promoting the FSL Department in secondary or the FSL curriculum in elementary school
- Understanding how to collect and use exemplars in the FSL classroom
- Communicating evaluation policies to parents and students
- Designing an FSL program based on Character Education
- Creating an inclusive environment for students with special needs
- Constructing one’s own professional action plan to ‘move up’ the FSL ladder
- Examining the characteristics of a good teaching program in FSL
- Learning how to prepare an in-service workshop for other FSL teachers
- Maintaining or improving the level of French through government language courses, exchanges etc.
- Analyzing online dictionaries, spell checks and grammar checks to be used in FSL
- Creating a web page to introduce your French Department or program to the community
Prerequisites
- Hold a “Certificate of Qualification” showing successful completion of Part II.
- Confirmation of Teaching Experience form, signed by a supervisory officer*, confirming two years of teaching experience completed after teacher’s certification. The Superintendent must also recognize on this Confirmation of Teaching Experience form that in one of these years, the candidate has demonstrated that significant program and instruction modifications in French as a Second Language were explicitly planned, implemented and reviewed in the teacher’s class. The form must be submitted prior to the course start date and for course approval.
