French as a Second Language Part 1 AQ (Western, Fall 2023, Online)

Current methods of teaching in the various French programs will be the focus of this introductory course. The topics will include reading and writing, communication skills, and the importance of French culture via dialogues, songs, games, and audio-visual aids.

Prerequisites

  1. General Certificate of Qualification and Registration (CQR) in Good Standing.
  2. A qualification in one of the following: Primary division; Junior division; Intermediate division in a general education subject from Schedule A; or Senior division in a general education subject from Schedule A.
    (Our office will verify your OCT status and CQR via the online OCT Public Register.  You do not need to send a copy.)
  3. At least five full year university courses in French.
    An official transcript(s) is required: Fax or email a copy to us upon registration AND follow up with an official transcript sent directly from the issuing institution. Note that course weights vary across institutions, i.e., Courses weighted as 3 credits are likely to be half courses. OR for candidates who wish admission but do not have five full year French courses, successful completion of the AQ French written and oral French test at Western. *Exemption from the test is available if the following is provided: proof of five full university courses in which the language of instruction was French. Candidates must demonstrate oral and written fluency in French and a thorough knowledge of grammar. A candidate who fails to demonstrate a satisfactory level of oral and written competence, or satisfactory knowledge of grammar, will be required to withdraw from the course;

NOTE: Should you register in FSL Part 1 AQ prior to the testing date, and are unsuccessful in the proficiency test, you will be subject to the refund policy in a course withdrawal: A refund of the course fee less the $100 non-refundable deposit would be issued.

This course is taught in French.

NOTE:

  • If you hold a Transitional Certificate of Qualification and Registration, you cannot enroll in an Additional Qualifications course.
  • Teachers trained outside of Ontario, and wishing to teach in Ontario, must be a fully registered member of the Ontario College of Teachers PRIOR to registration in an AQ.
  • Exceptions to the above are made for trained teachers from other jurisdictions who do not plan to teach in Ontario. Contact [email protected] for more information.

PRE-EVALUATION OPTION: Admission is dependent on meeting the academic prerequisites. If you are unsure of your eligibility, it is strongly advised to have your transcript assessed prior to enrollment in the AQ course. Pre-evaluation requests must be received by the ASPIRE Program office no later than 10 days prior to registration deadline for the session.
