AQ French as a Second Language, Part 1
Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to develop understanding of classroom theory and practice in FSL required for core and immersion programs. Candidates are equipped with the skills needed to teach FSL at the primary, junior, intermediate and senior levels. This course reinforces the importance of learning this second language with real life experiences and technologies in the classroom. Teachers promote its usage with students as well as parents involvement with community events and activities. NOTE: Veuillez noter que le cours sera donné entièrement en français! Topics include:
- Analyzing classroom practice to assist students with commitment to FSL learning
- Understanding francophone culture in Canada and around the world
- Demonstrating understanding of how to accommodate and /or modify expectations, strategies and assessment for students with special needs in FSL
- Using real life experiences and technologies in the FSL classroom
- Understanding relevant and authentic assessment practices
- Demonstrating the AIM program
- Reviewing resources used in the elementary and secondary FSL Core classroom
- Using music and drama in the FSL classroom
- Understanding how to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing
- Understanding FSL Extended and Immersion approaches to French and to other subjects taught in French
Requirements:

- Hold a “Certificate of Qualification” or “Interim Certificate of Qualification” showing basic qualifications in two divisions, i.e. Primary, Junior, Intermediate, or Senior. (Candidates who hold an Interim COQ may have different/additional criteria for registration as required by the Ontario College of Teachers, and as specified on their Interim COQ.)
- Certificate of Qualification must be in good standing
- Pass the French proficiency Test with at least an overall B. There is a $50.00 charge for the cost of the test.
AQ French as a Second Language, Part 2
Course Description:
This course expands on the knowledge and skills acquired in Part I. It further develops theories and practices of second language acquisition and provides an advanced examination of additional French language instruction strategies to teachers who wish to deepen their ability to develop FSL programs: Core, Extended, and Immersion. NOTE: Veuillez noter que le cours sera donné entièrement en français!
Topics include:
• Using relevant research and school improvement plans to review and revise FSL programs
• Expanding the use of technology, art, drama and music in the FSL classroom
• Understanding the AIM program in more detail
• Exploring the communicative and cooperative approaches
• Re-examining inductive and deductive teaching
• Developing motivational strategies to generate student interest and retention
• Developing lessons and units in the Core, Extended or Immersion class including split grades
• Exploring different strategies for a class novel study and independent reading
• Incorporating the writing process
• Exploring the role of French culture including song, dance, poetry, visual
Requirements:
- Hold a “Certificate of Qualification” showing successful completion of Part 1.
- “Certificate of Qualification” must be in good standing.
- Confirmation of Teaching Experience form, signed by a supervisory officer, confirming one year of teaching experience completed after teacher’s certification.* The Ontario College of Teachers defines “supervisory official” as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. (A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity). For a teacher employed by a private school, the “supervisory official” is the Ministry of Education official (e.g. Education Officer) appointed to provide supervisory services to the school.

AQ French as a Second Language, Specialist (Spring 2018)
Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to extend the knowledge and skills from Part I and II, with a focus on leadership skills in FSL education. It further focuses on theories and practices of second language acquisition and assessment and provides additional strategies to teachers who wish to deepen their ability to develop FSL programs: Core, Extended, and Immersion. NOTE: Veuillez noter que le course sera donné entièrement en français!
Topics in this course include:
· Developing leadership skills as a Department Head in the planning of meetings
· Providing an array of strategies to assist other FSL teachers in the department
· Examining different roles in leadership in FSL (contacts, department heads, consultants….)
· Promoting the FSL Department in secondary or the FSL curriculum in elementary school
· Understanding how to collect and use exemplars in the FSL classroom
· Communicating evaluation policies to parents and students
· Designing an FSL program based on Character Education
· Creating an inclusive environment for students with special needs
· Constructing one’s own professional action plan to ‘move up’ the FSL ladder
· Examining the characteristics of a good teaching program in FSL
· Learning how to prepare an in-service workshop for other FSL teachers
· Maintaining or improving the level of French through government language courses, exchanges etc.
· Analyzing online dictionaries, spell checks and grammar checks to be used in FSL.
· Creating a web page to introduce your French Department or program to the community
Requirements:
- Hold a “Certificate of Qualification” showing successful completion of AQ French as a Second Language, Part 2.
- “Certificate of Qualification” must be in good standing.
- Confirmation of Teaching Experience form, signed by a supervisory officer, confirming two years of teaching experience completed after teacher’s certification. The Superintendent must also recognize on this Confirmation of Teaching Experience form that in one of these years, the candidate has demonstrated that significant program and instruction modifications in French as a Second Language were explicitly planned, implemented and reviewed in the teacher’s class. Form must be submitted within two weeks of the course start date.
