As teachers, we need to develop an understanding of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit ways and perspectives so that we can implement culturally relevant strategies in our classrooms. This Additional Qualification course will focus on providing you with an increasing awareness and understanding of each separate group of Aboriginal peoples and the existing diversity of their history, culture, and worldview.
In this course, you will learn about:
-the diversity of Aboriginal nations and world view differences;
-Aboriginal issues and effects on education;
-the impact of a culturally-relevant classroom environment;
-the role of elders and other human resources in the classroom;
-selecting relevant and appropriate materials and resources;
-creating lessons and assignments that will increase the awareness of Native people;
-traditional theories of respect, responsibility, reciprocity, and relevance; and
-the contributions of Aboriginal people.
