Course Description

First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples: Understanding Traditional Teachings, Histories, Current Issues and Cultures, Part 1

Candidates will examine diverse Indigenous peoples of Canada, understand colonization and its impact, and identify steps to decolonize one’s own practice through respectful community collaboration and curricular Indigenization. Candidates engage in critical discourse aimed at dismantling colonial stances in education and take meaningful steps toward change in their day-to-day practice.

This course will be offered for the first time at Western in the Winter of 2024.

Course normally offered in Winter session.

Prerequisites

  1. General Certificate of Qualification and Registration (CQR) in Good Standing.
  2. A qualification in one of the following: Primary division; Junior division; Intermediate division in a general education subject from Schedule A; or Senior division in a general education subject from Schedule A. (Our office will verify your OCT status and CQR via the online OCT Public Register. You do not need to send a copy.)

NOTE:

  • If you hold a Transitional Certificate of Qualification and Registration, you cannot enroll in an Additional Qualifications course.
  • Teachers trained outside of Ontario, and wishing to teach in Ontario, must be a fully registered member of the Ontario College of Teachers PRIOR to registration in an AQ.
  • Exceptions to the above are made for trained teachers from other jurisdictions who do not plan to teach in Ontario. Contact [email protected] for more information.
