This course provides an overview of education law in Ontario. It is divided into four learning experiences that examine general principles of law in-depth. The four learning experiences are: the rights of the individual, the rights and responsibilities of employees, the rights and responsibility of the employer, and governance. Candidates will not only examine the legislation but will also examine case law, arbitrations, and results of other quasi-judicial proceedings in an attempt to better understand how the law is applied.
In recognition that the field of education primarily a place of learning but also a place where individuals work, the course will examine employment law within the context of the school system.
Candidates will examine numerous case studies that will provide an opportunity for examining legislation, policies, and procedures within a specific context, and to use this information to reflect upon their own professional practice.
This course would be of interest to all teachers seeking a leadership role in education in the future.
