Ontario’s schools are increasingly diverse. Students come from around the world, and require a greater understanding of English to be successful in school. This course provides you with an introduction to the teaching and learning of English as a Second Language: second-language acquisition, current instructional strategies, the research, the role of Canadian immigration laws, and linguistic factors. You will learn to build on the prior knowledge of literacy of your individual students. You examine the relationship of linguistic factors to the school and its curriculum and explore current issues as they relate to second language learning.
