Course Description

Construction Technology: Grade 9 & 10, equips educators to effectively teach construction aspects of Ontario’s Technology Education Curriculum. Emphasizing health and safety, Universal Design for Learning, and environmental education, the course ensures inclusive, engaging, and secure learning environments. It covers curriculum understanding from an equity perspective, assessment strategies, and best practices for tool usage. Through project-based learning and Backwards Design, educators learn to prioritize safety while promoting student engagement. Sustainable woodworking practices are integrated, fostering environmental stewardship. Graduates are equipped to teach construction courses, prioritize health and safety, and promote student success.

Learner Outcomes

Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of construction-focused aspects of the Ontario Technology Education Curriculum, integrating principles of health and safety, Universal *Design for Learning (UDL), and environmental education.*Apply effective teaching strategies, including project-based learning and scaffolding techniques, with a constant emphasis on health and safety considerations.*Evaluate and implement assessment and evaluation strategies that promote equity and support diverse student needs within construction technology courses.*Integrate health and safety practices into planning, facilitating, and assessing construction projects and units, ensuring a secure and inclusive learning environment for all students.*Develop a deep understanding of the importance of woodworking techniques and sustainable practices in construction education, emphasizing environmental stewardship and resource conservation.*Design cohesive learning experiences that prioritize health and safety, foster a deep understanding of the construction industry’s societal importance, and promote student success within the Technology Education Curriculum.

Prerequisites

An Ontario Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification indicating initial qualifications at the Intermediate and Senior divisions in Technological Education and wage-earning experience in the sector. Technological Education applicants whose Ontario Certificate of Qualification or Interim Certificate of Qualification does not indicate Intermediate and Senior divisions in Technological Education, must provide evidence of at least five years of relevant wage-earning experience (outside of teaching) in the subject for which qualification is sought. In some instances, pertinent education may substitute for some wage-earning experience.
