The purpose of the Additional Qualification course: Visual Arts, Specialist is to extend skills and knowledge of teachers in the teaching and assessment of visual arts education. Critical to the delivery of Visual Arts, Specialist is the ability of teachers to ensure positive learning experiences for all students.

- evaluating the role art can play in cross-curricular studies
- promoting multicultural art in the classroom
- designing as well as evaluating innovative practices in visual arts education
- strengthening personal artistic competencies related to classroom instruction
- understanding rights and responsibilities in dealing with censorship an controversial art issues in the classroom and museum
- understanding the roles and responsibilities of the art critic, art historian, art advocate, department head, museum art educator, art mentor and art specialist
- facilitating mentorship and coaching networks
- facilitating opportunities for ongoing professional learning opportunities for teachers in visual arts education
- modeling collaborative approaches to educational planning in visual arts education across the curriculum
- comparing art from diverse cultures (native, multicultural, Canadian)
- having an awareness of innovative art trends
