The purpose of the Additional Qualification course: Visual Arts, Part II is to apprise and to apply skills and knowledge of teachers in the design, delivery, and assessment of visual arts education. The Additional Qualification course: Visual Arts, Part II supports the expectations outlined in the Ministry of Education curriculum policy documents and other Ministry of Education policies
Topics include:
- applying the functions of art and visual arts education, both for the individual and for society
- applying critically various theories of perception, cognition and creativity in teaching and learning as they apply to programming in the visual arts
- demonstrating that the works of artists from diverse cultures contain commonalities
- applying knowledge of aesthetics, art criticism and art history as contextual elements for art objects
- applying an understanding of design concepts and modes of representation in order to develop appropriate art curricula for students
- knowing and providing appropriate art exemplars
- understanding and demonstrating skills in management responsibilities, such as development and maintenance of student portfolios, conservation of materials, art room organization, and display
- demonstrating how art can play a role in cross-curricular programming
- demonstrating to students how to plan, reflect on, and critique their own art work
- making connections between making art in the classroom and the world outside the classroom
- applying multiple methods of assessment, both formal and informal, formative and summative, and a range of assessment strategies
- developing and maintaining community partnerships (e.g. with museums, art galleries, etc.)
- continuing to examine major monuments and significant accomplishments in art history
- having an awareness of the impact of photography on image-making
