Course Description

The purpose of the Additional Qualification Course: Music – Instrumental (Strings) Part 1 is to develop the skills and knowledge of the candidates in the development, delivery, and assessment of string music instrumental studies. The Additional Qualification Course: Music – Instrumental (Strings) Part 1 supports the expectations outlined in the Ministry of Education curriculum policy documents and other Ministry of Education policies.

Course Outline

Topics include: demonstrating basic performance skills on the violin and ukulele; demonstrating an understanding of how to successfully set up a string music classroom (e.g., how to tune the instruments, determine proper instrument size, instrument care and maintenance, string equipment/accessories, etc.); understanding the theoretical and practical relevance of proper teaching methods and how to establish a technical/musical foundation on the instruments; demonstrating an understanding of basic theory and music history, the value of string instruction and music education advocacy within a community/school, the importance of communication in the string classroom (e.g., use of imagery, modeling/demonstrations, etc.), steps to learning a new piece, and effective practice strategies; demonstrating an understanding of the importance of choosing appropriate string method books and repertoire; demonstrating an ability to read and conduct from the scores of beginning level repertoire; demonstrating planning and teaching skills in non-performance activities (e.g., using accommodating and modifying expectation strategies and assessment practices based on the developmental or special needs of students); understanding the importance of technology and YouTube in current string instruction; developing an understanding of the level of difficulty in repertoire as it relates to the students’ abilities to meet or exceed performance expectations, common technical/musical challenges in the string classroom, and remedial strategies; devising and employing a variety of assessment and evaluation instruments appropriate to the developmental stages of the students; developing classroom management strategies and making connections with other areas of the curriculum.

Notes

Candidates who hold Technological Education qualifications but do not have any basic qualifications in Primary, Junior, Intermediate, or Senior divisions are only eligible to register in Part 1 as specified by the Ontario College of Teachers.

There is a requirement to have or rent a violin and a ukulele for this course. The candidate may wish to consider contacting a music store in order to rent these instruments.

Prerequisites

  • Hold a “Certificate of Qualification” or Interim “Certificate of Qualification” showing basic qualifications in two divisions (e.g., Primary, Junior, Intermediate, or Senior). Candidates who hold an Interim COQ may have different/additional criteria for registration as required by the Ontario College of Teachers, and as specified on their Interim COQ.
