This course is intended to provide candidates with practical, hands-on experience in additional brass, woodwinds instruments from their Part I experience, percussion, and some contact with strings, guitar, and Musical Instrumental Digital Interface (MIDI) applications. Candidates will also have opportunities to sing as a means of human expression, and are encouraged to use the singing voice as a tool for interpretive teaching.
Topics include:
- demonstrating basic performance skills on two additional instruments: one brass, one woodwind (different from the instruments chosen in the Part 1 experience)
- demonstrating knowledge and teaching approaches of standard percussion instruments (i.e., band/orchestral percussion)
- experiencing and applying a variety of music practices, including creating/improvising, world music, small ensembles, choir
- applying knowledge of conducting using standard patterns
- demonstrating an ability to read and conduct from conductor’s scores of intermediate level repertoire
- demonstrating an understanding of the importance of beginning and intermediate method books and repertoire selection for the instrumental class
- demonstrating group teaching and rehearsal skills in warm-ups, technique exercises and other classroom performance activities
- demonstrating the relationship among program planning, assessment and evaluation and teaching/learning strategies that reflect key components of instrumental music
- continuing to situate musical pieces in context
- introducing composers for music history
- demonstrating the ability to properly set up an instrumental music room/facility for effective instruction and learning
