The Additional Qualification course: Media, Part I, is an introductory course. It focuses on the theory and practice underpinning media studies. This course will be of interest to all teachers who wish to prepare themselves to teach the media strand in English courses at all grade levels or others who wish to learn more about media
Topics include:
- understanding general communication and media issues generated by the study of media theory
- understanding the role of popular culture media artifacts (such as toys, and environments such as theme parks, malls, and public spaces)
- understanding the role of media industries and the commercial implications of media
- analysing curricular documents which have significant media content
- developing knowledge and skill in production of a media product
- exploring the elements of cultural studies through understanding the influence of gender, race and class on audience response
- understanding the influence of media and globalization
- identifying factors in a diverse and changing society that impact on the student (e.g. media, technology, socio-economic status, family patterns,language, culture, gender)
- using available computer technology and programs
- communicating with parents/guardians about the course content and philosophy of media studies
