This course expands on the knowledge and foundations of dance acquired in Part 1. This course provides an opportunity to all teachers who wish to broaden their knowledge and expertise in dance studies. The focus in this course is the development of specialized knowledge and skills in dance through an emphasis of a variety of forms of dance.
Topics in this course include:
- applying the elements of dance in several dance forms
- understanding the historical and cultural significance of various world dance forms
- understanding appropriate presentation skills for all levels of learner
- developing technical proficiency in additional dance forms
- demonstrating the ability to choreograph dance works for presentation
- understanding movement skills appropriate for all levels of learners
- understanding various technologies relevant to dance (internet, recording music)
- observing and analyzing local dance performances, and dance videos
- understanding methods of integration of dance into other areas of the curriculum
- using, accommodating, and modifying expectations, strategies and assessment practices based on the developmental or special needs of students
- understanding, devising and employing a variety of assessment and evaluation instruments appropriate to the developmental stage of students and the delivery of the curriculum
- demonstrating knowledge of legal and ethical issues and responsibilities related to dance studies (e.g. privacy act, , sexual abuse and harassment, homophobia)
- understanding of dance clothing policies that are appropriate for all students (male, female, those with restrictions based on religion or ethnicity)
- understanding dance movements in cultural dance forms that avoid stereotyping
- establishing relationships in order to work collaboratively with community members and organizations with respect to facilities, personnel, expertise and equipment
- soliciting community volunteers to work in partnership with the school community to support dance studies programs
