The Additional Qualification course in Alternative Education is a comprehensive exploration of the “”other”” educational tradition, the one evolving alongside and in tension with standardization. By the end of this course, learners will advance skills that can support a variety of alternative practices in alternative and mainstream settings. They will evolve professional insight and strategies towards more equitable practices, specifically as they relate to inclusivity, cognitive development and identity formation. Through modelling and exploration, they will learn how to integrate Free, Democratic, Constructivist and Unschooling principles to provide for holistic learning communities that are more student-centered, collaborative, inquiry based and metacognitive. Structured into four major units: The Theoretical Foundations of Alternative Education; Program Planning, Development and Implementation for Alternative Schools and Programs; Alternative Instructional Strategies and Learning Environments; and Alternative Approaches to Assessment and Evaluation, this course is content rich, but is about alternative practice and the development of useful and usable classroom materials.
