The Additional Basic Qualification course in Technological Design, grades 9 and 10, focuses on the skills and theory underpinning the study of Technological Design. This course addresses the development of adolescents, program planning and delivery issues, the school environment.

Topics include:

  • reviewing theories of adolescent development (social, emotional, physical, intellectual, linguistic, cultural, spiritual and moral), as they relate to the adolescent learner
  • reviewing theories of exceptionality as they relate to the adolescent learner in Technological Design programs
  • understanding the theoretical foundations of Technological Design, particularly the broad-based pedagogical approach, the design process, problem solving and technological concepts
  • reviewing Ministry of Education policies that relate to the adolescent learner
  • understanding the types of secondary school courses (university preparation, college preparation, workplace preparation including apprenticeship) and their relationship to students’ post-secondary goals
  • identifying, accessing, assessing and integrating community, print, electronic and collegial resources that link closely to the Ontario curriculum
  • identifying the safe, ethical and legal use of technology in Technological Design programs
  • understanding business management and entrepreneurial practices related to the Technological Design program
  • understanding, devising and employing a variety of assessment and evaluation instruments appropriate to the developmental stage of students and to the Technological Design curriculum
  • implementing effective classroom management strategies appropriate for the adolescent learner in the Integrated Technologies and Technological Design learning environments
  • demonstrating an understanding of facility design and maintenance practices as per industry standards
  • identifying strategies to establish links between the community, school and the Technological Design program
  • demonstrating the ability to employ a variety of effective communication strategies for collaborating with parents/guardians and others
  • recognizing teachers’ legal obligations and responsibilities according to current provincial legislation in the delivery of Technological Design programs
