Supporting Teachers in the Use of Inquiry through the Revised Social Studies, History and Geography Curriculum

This session explores a recently developed teacher resource for supporting inquiry in social studies and environmental education. Designed for grades 4-8, this resource supports the revised SSHG curriculum which challenges students to explore content by formulating, investigating, and answering questions, though teachers at all elementary levels will find something useful. Learn how these challenges can be met using an inquiry-based approach to encourage student curiosity, increase engagement and collectively generate questions from which lessons can be developed.

This session:

• examines the inquiry process

• explores multiple options involved in planning and teaching successful SSHG inquiries linked to environmental education

• learns how to guide students in their investigations, providing them with control over their learning

Each participant will have access to resources to support teachers in the implementation of the revised SSHG curriculum, including an inquiry process Guide containing junior and intermediate lessons, videos and suggested activities for integration across subjects and divisions.

Audience: Junior, Intermediate (Primary teachers will find many ideas, as well)
