This course is recommended for people who are already certified in the Primary or Junior division. It will not grant you either the Primary or Junior division. Numeracy is one of the major directions from the Ministry and clearly, mathematics instruction is a priority in today’s classroom. As a teacher, the Expert Panel Report on Early Math and Junior Math, curriculum implementation issues, assessing and evaluating for the provincial report cards, external testing, and calls for greater accountability challenge you. This course addresses these challenges in a supportive way, with the aim of assisting you to improve your practice and help your students become more effective learners. The major themes you will study in this course are the child’s cognitive development as it relates to mathematics, the subject content, integration within the total program and effective assessment procedures. The course will build your comfort level, while giving you a greater understanding of mathematics through hands-on experiences, interactive learning, problem-solving, open-ended investigations, and a variety of assessment practices to help with the standard report card.
