“Grit” and school success: helping students develop perseverance

By the end of this session, teachers will be able to:

  • Understand the psychological trait that is known as “grit”
  • Develop classroom practices that foster perseverance
  • Use Carol Dweck’s concept of “growth mindset” in planning learning
  • Teach students how the brain processes information in order to gain more control over their own learning
  • Teach colleagues/parents/others about the importance of perseverance as an indicator of success rather than only IQ
  • Understand and apply the concept that “not everything that can be counted counts and not everything that counts can be counted” (Albert Einstein).
