This session is an introduction to how to plan a math unit using the curriculum and students’ prior knowledge as starting points. We will discuss what to do when you have a split grade or a wide range of knowledge and skills in one class. Once a sense of the big ideas and the continuum of math concepts and strategies are understood, we will look at how to design and test rich problems with multiple entries points and then choose minds on activities. Participants will leave with a Grade 5 fractions unit suitable for a class with students at diverse entry points as well as links to useful resources to use on their own. The process is applicable to any topic or grade, so teachers of other grades will find useful information for their own classes.
