This project is designed to teach social responsibility to primary students by using suitable picture books and critical thinking skills. After reading the book The Golden Rule by Ilene Cooper, students develop criteria that outline, in simple terms, the most important actions that would make the world a better place. Based on those criteria they examine a number of books and the cause and effect of our behaviour. They judge behaviour (judge the better or the best), decode puzzles, re-write a song and extend the end of a book, and design tasks to take the appropriate action that reflect their social responsibility within the school environment. Eventually they come up with criteria that determine true friendship which sets the framework for cooperative behaviour in the classroom and at school.
