This resource recognizes that in order to foster the development of literacy skills, high school English courses must move beyond the study of traditional narrative texts, and thus focus on the study of non-narrative texts. It also addresses the need to instruct students in skills to access specialized vocabulary and visual depictions of information. Critical exposure to informational texts will clarify a writing style with which many students struggle. The resource guide defines the types and features of texts and identifies reading strategies for various print and non-print materials to support effective student interaction with these forms.
