Research in education, concerning the junior grades, continues to progress and evolve. The needs of 21st century learners are embedded throughout the Ontario curriculum documents and play a prominent role in our instructional practice in every subject area. Teachers completing this course will have the opportunity to discover the components of an effective junior classroom, with a thorough understanding of how to approach instruction with grade 4 to 6 students in a constantly changing learning environment. Participants will have the opportunity to study current educational research and strategies which support student achievement. Throughout the course there will be substantial opportunities for participants to develop their own personal understanding of best current practices, as well as to develop their knowledge of the underlying theories and professional skills used by effective educators. By the conclusion of the course, participants will have the necessary tools to competently set up and run an effective program for students in the junior division. This course is designed to help teachers develop the knowledge and skills necessary for effective teaching in the junior division. It provides an overview of the junior learner, and addresses The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 4-6 in a variety of subject areas, and relates resource documents, and current research to instruction with the curriculum. The goal of this course is to make teachers comfortable and confident in their daily practice for junior students. Through participation in current, collaborative, and engaging online modules, teachers will acquire skills and resources to support them in being effective and competent junior educators.
