This course provides candidates with a strong foundation and understanding of the vision and philosophy related to Health and Physical Education concerning adolescents at the Intermediate level. It also focuses on the ability of teachers to ensure positive learning experiences for all students with safe and motivating programs that will result in students choosing to lead healthy active lives. Candidates will have opportunities to participate in practical and theoretical experiences. This course leads to a basic qualification in the Intermediate Division.

Course Outline

NOTE: This is a blended course consisting of 72 hours of face-to-face time and 28 hours online.

  • Ministry of Education K-12 curriculum guidelines
  • OSBIE Safety Standards and practices
  • Characteristics of the adolescent learner
  • Teaching and learning styles; differentiating instruction for practical use in the classroom and gym
  • Formative and summative assessments in the classroom and gym
  • Individual sports (track and field)
  • Team sports (volleyball, soccer, basketball)
  • Physical Education and students with special needs
  • Daily Physical Activity
  • Teaching games for understanding
  • Health and the media

Prerequisites

  • Certificate of Qualification
  • Bachelor’s degree from an Ontario university in a program that requires four years of university study, or the equivalent, to a total of at least 20 full year courses and in which the candidate has obtained at least second class or equivalent standing (B average – 70%) in at least NINE full year courses in the subject for which the candidate seeks qualification. (Note that course weights vary across institutions. Courses weighted as 3 credits are likely to be half courses.);
  • Evidence of at least two years of successful teaching experience, of which at least one year (194 days) includes teaching in this subject area, as certified by the appropriate supervisory officer.
  • The minimum passing grade for an Honour Specialist qualification is 70%
