Part 1 – At the end of this active and engaging course, teachers will have a mix of practical and theoretical ideas to bring back to their classrooms in the fall. Learn about the various aspects that make a successful music programme, and experience different approaches to music education. Activate your own creativity as a musician and a teacher as we experience processes for inspiring creative and critical thinking in our students. Move, sing, dance and play the recorder and other instruments, experiencing the joy of music the way you want your students to.
Part 2- The emphasis in this popular and lively course is on planning and assessment while continuing to explore all aspects of effectiveness in elementary music. Stretch your musical skills by selecting and teaching a choral piece to a small group and expanding your recorder abilities. Activate your own creativity as a musician and a teacher as we experience processes for inspiring creative and critical thinking in our students.
Part 3 – This course emphasizes the development of musical literacy in accordance with the Ontario Curriculum, Grades 1-8. Candidates examine the Primary/Junior Music Curriculum holistically, and adapt it to various specific school settings. they also investigate research on how students learn. Readings from a variety of sources provide a philosophical and methodological foundation for developing effective music education practice in the classroom. By the conclusion of the program, successful participants are able to: demonstrate an understanding of music education as an important form of human expression, examine Ministry of Education program guidelines and standards, select instructional strategies to suit the appropriate developmental stages of students, and design curriculum that enable students to meet both overall and specific learning expectations. Music teachers are encouraged to become arts education leaders and advocates, both in the school and amongst members of the school community. Creativity, critical thinking and problem solving are connected to The Ontario Learning Expectations through a series of workshops with a guest artist.
