This resource consists of two design down grade 5 curriculum units. One is for Social Studies (Canadian Government) and the other is for Science (Conservation of Energy). While certain resources are named in the project, other resources may be substituted according to available resources.
Canadian Government Unit – concepts related to effective debate presentation, becoming a Canadian citizen and different responsibilities associated with the three levels of government are explored in this unit of study. The students complete a storyboard, a debate along with other assessments for learning. The culminating activity requires students to design a playground and present a persuasive argument to convince their fellow constituents (classmates) to vote for their respective design.
Conservation of Energy Unit – concepts related to energy sources, energy transformation, different types of energy, conservation of energy and the immediate and long term effects of energy use on society and the environment are all explored in this unit. The students complete a public service announcement along with other assessments for learning. The culminating activity requires students to design an energy efficient home.
