This course explores structure and factors as they relate to creating classroom communities and rethink classroom management. It also explores student/teacher self-care, mental health and well-being as it relates to classroom environments, teaching and learning.

This course is designed for educators to develop an understanding of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and its impact on learning, social, communication and life skills. Focusing on evidence based strategies, candidates will through individual and collaborative learning, be able to develop program planning and support students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the classroom environment.  The foundation of this course is to create a positive learning environment that promotes equity, diversity and inclusivity in teaching our exceptional students.

Course Outline

Topics Include:

  • fostering a culture of inquiry that explores emerging research and practices in the field of autism spectrum disorders
  • critically exploring the science and principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (A.B.A.) to support learning and well-being
  • critically exploring and integrating educational processes, practices and policies that support learners’ well-being and efficacy
  • critically exploring and integrating inclusive processes for fostering interprofessional collaboration that support the collaborative development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (I.E.P.) and Transition Plans for learners that include the voices and perspectives of all those involved
  • critically exploring the concept of “spectrum” in autism spectrum disorders and its implications for teaching and learning
  • collaboratively exploring various program delivery approaches that support learning and well-being of learners with autism spectrum disorders
  • critically exploring and deepening understanding of program design, planning, development and implementation strategies and frameworks that meet the diverse needs of students with communication-related disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder
