Course Description:
This course will extend skills and knowledge and develop and in-depth understanding in the design, delivery and assessment of the Ontario Curriculum for the Junior Grades 4-6. It focuses on the belief that effective junior programs include active, play-based learning and develop an individualized curriculum to enhance and support social and language development of junior-aged students.
Topics in this course include:
- Role of the teacher at the junior level
- Theories of cognitive development
- Reading and the junior learner (teaching strategies, literacy , attention to boys’ literacy, literature circles)
- Teaching writing, writing development (6 traits + 1)
- Media Literacy at the junior level
- Assessment strategies for literacy
- Mathematics at the Junior Level (instructional approaches, math manipulatives, differentiating instruction for math)
- Accommodations and Modifications, differentiating instruction for students with special needs
- Daily Physical Activity at the junior level
- General Classroom Management at the junior level
Requirements:
- Hold a “Certificate of Qualification” showing basic qualifications in two divisions: i.e. Primary, Intermediate, or Senior.
- “Certificate of Qualification” must be in good standing.
- An acceptable university degree
