Student assessment and evaluation is an integral part of the teaching and learning process. Teachers in Ontario are required to use diverse forms of assessment to support and communicate progress in learning to students, parents, and school administrators. This course will build on your current assessment practice and support you in exploring ways to enhance your use of assessment. Specifically, we will examine current assessment theory and practices and critically reflect on how they might be integrated into your classroom.
In this course you will learn about:
– Theories of learning to inform assessment design
– Planning assessment that complement curriculum expectations and educational programming
– Foundational principles of assessment: Reliability, validity, fairness, and bias
– Designing a variety of assessments including tests and rubrics
– Grading, reporting, and communicating student achievement
– Integrating large-scale assessment data into educational programming
– Accommodating assessment for students with exceptionalities
In this course you will complete the following:
– Compare and contrast learning theories and consider their application to student assessment
– Design a unit of study that integrates curriculum expectations with various forms of assessment
– Construct a unit test using principles of test construct
– Construct a rubric using contemporary learning theories
– Consider the challenges and uses of large-scale assessments
– Accommodate an assessment for a student with an exceptionality
